The Escalier de Cristal, a baluster vase on a bronze stand and a pair of bamboo vases in Japonesque crystal

Dimensions
Width 9'' ½  24cm
Height 12'' ⅝  32cm
Depth: 6'' ¼  16cm

Origin:
Circa 1880-1890, France

A Parisian luxury house active throughout the nineteenth century, the Escalier de Cristal produced crystal and bronze objects of the highest quality of execution. Its output during the 1880s and 1890s was strongly marked by the Japonesque taste, to which this set belongs, bringing together a baluster vase and a pair of bamboo vases united by a shared palette of black, charcoal and gold. The baluster vase, raised on a foot, is made of crystal with a lozenge-shaped section and is decorated with enamel and gold in the Japonesque taste. The body depicts a minogame turtle emerging from the waves, its long trailing tail rendered in gold; in the upper section, the moon appears from a bank of clouds worked in charcoal and silvered tones. The lip and the foot are underlined with wolf's-tooth friezes. The vase rests on a four-legged bronze stand with a shaded brown patina, decorated with roots encircling the base, the legs ornamented in low relief with stylised waves. It is signed in gold beneath the base: Escalier de Cristal Paris. The pair of bamboo vases, inspired by the form of bamboo, comprises two vases of square section with a central swelling. The graphic decoration, etched with acid and with the wheel and then enamelled in tones of black, charcoal and gold, draws on the Japanese iconographic vocabulary. The neck and the base each bear, on every face, black-ground triangles animated with gilded foliate scrollwork, while the swollen section is ornamented with medallions worked in the same palette. The upper rim has in all likelihood been re-blackened.
