L’Escalier de Cristal (attributed to), a cylindrical Japanese-style vase decorated with a dragon, crystal and gilt bronze
Dimensions
Height 12'' ⅝ 32cm
diameter: 6'' ¾ 17cm
Origin:
French, 19th century
This tall cylindrical vase decorated with a gilded bronze dragon is carved from thick crystal, hammered and engraved with cloud-like patterns. It is set in a finely chiseled gilded bronze element depicting waves on the lower register. Wrapped around the vase, the dragon clings to the rim with one of its claws. The sinuousness of the body and the details are rendered with great accuracy (whiskers, scales, dorsal spine); likewise, the threatening attitude of the monster, which shows its teeth with its mouth open. The frequency of the motif of a dragon entwined around a cup or vase in the production of the Escalier de Cristal, as well as the quality of the execution, confirm the attribution to the Parisian house.
Founded around 1808 by the widow Désarnaud, Escalier de Cristal was taken over by the brothers Georges and Henri Pannier in 1885. They adopted the Japanese-inspired aesthetic that was very much in vogue at the time, while maintaining the high quality of craftsmanship for which the company was renowned. Our vase can be dated to around this period.
