Status:
Rosewood, gilt bronze, porcelain marquetry. In very good condition.

Mounted in gilt bronze, this elegant pair of planters is decorated with a Greek frieze and lion heads in gilt bronze , as well as inlaid flowers. Their great naturalism illustrates the technical mastery of Julien-Nicolas Rivart , inventor of porcelain marquetry, for which he registered a patent in 1849. Campanulas and roses are thus blooming in fresh colors on the surface of the wood, enhancing the preciosity of this work.

Several times rewarded at the World's Fairs , Rivart porcelain inlays are particularly appreciated by critics both French and English. The technique by Rivart, 'one of the most important innovations for the decoration of furniture pieces', is unanimously greeted for the charm its porcelain inlays releases, and the originality of the process. This innovative technique has never been implemented except by its inventor: despite the critical success it meets at the World's Fairs , where Rivart obtains several medals, it disappears with the artists' death in 1867.
