This adjustable gilt-bronze firedog is decorated with two lion-headed griffins. Positioned on either side of an ingenious adjustable mechanism, the griffins wear headdresses and jeweled ornaments evocative of those of ancient Egyptian pharaohs. Their wings and tails follow the lines of fluted columns, whose capitals topped with spheres recall the architecture of Egyptian temples. At the center, a feline mask frames vegetal scrolls and clusters of grapes. This fireplace accessory is a fine example of the popularity enjoyed by Egyptomania in France throughout the 19th century.
