Large antique Napoleon III style fireplace with detached columns, made out of Marquina Black and Griotte Red marble during the 19th century. This fireplace is an extremely rare and very elaborate style, particularly due to the use of several types of marble and the quality of the carving. This fireplace is signed by Jules Cantini in Marseille (see pictures).
Jules Cantini was a sculptor and a mareble worker, established in Marseille at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. He first started in the sector with his brother, Pierre, and bought several marble quarries from Carrara in Italy as well as in Algeria. He became a famous sculptor, and was asked to sculpt features for private and public sectors, in particular for the church Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille.
This fireplace is sold with its original cast iron insert but without a hearth. A hearth can be made to order.
