Large gilt-brass fireplace screen in the form of a folding fan, in the Napoleon III style. The pierced and finely engraved blades—nine in total—are richly decorated with Renaissance Revival motifs: scrolling foliage, winged dragons, confronting griffins, and fantastical figures.
The ornate handle at the top allows the fan to fold into a compact form. The dramatic base features two large opposing dolphins ridden by winged putti holding lanterns, surrounding a central chimera rising from acanthus scrolls. The whole rests on a tripod base decorated with acanthus leaves and lion paw feet.
A highly decorative and functional fireplace screen, embodying the opulent aesthetic of the Second Empire.
