J. SERRE, Pair of bronze caryatids representing Bellona

Dimensions
Width 21'' ⅝  55cm
Height 105'' ⅞  269cm
Depth: 11''   28cm

Origin:
second half of the 19th century

This pair of terms depicting Bellona, the goddess of war, is signed by the Parisian founder J. Serre. These statues originally served as decorative applique elements for a facade. The rare figure of the sister of the god Mars is identifiable here by the dragon surmounting her winged helmet.

The composition of these bronze terms is directly inspired by ancient statues of Hermes: a bust atop a quadrangular block representing the deity without arms. The base is shaped like clawed feet, while acanthus leaves and flowers decorate the rectangular shaft.

The goddess wears scale armor entwined with snakes, featuring an apotropaic mask. The calm and impassive expression of her face contrasts with the menacing dragon headdress, which reveals the warrior nature of the deity.
