Wrought iron bracket with winged chimera decoration

Dimensions
Width 7'' ⅞  20cm
Height 56'' ¾  144cm
Depth: 20'' ⅛  51cm

Origin:
France, late 19th century

It is possible that this wrought iron gallows served as a decorative element, a lantern holder, or a sign on the façade, as was customary in the 18th and 19th centuries. Similar decorative wrought iron signs can be found at the Carnavalet Museum, although they date from the 18th century. Superbly designed and technically masterful, the winged body of this hybrid chimera is twisted into volutes to which a pair of wings is attached. A menacing dragon's head adorns its summit. With its vibrantly light, scroll-like body, this chimera evokes the ironwork on the façade of the Güell Palace in Barcelona and the beginnings of the European Art Nouveau movement. Nevertheless, the subject evokes a medieval inspiration... Some visible losses.
