This impressive carved walnut table is from the end of the 19th century and belongs to the Neo-Renaissance style. The whole structure beneath the table and around the table surface are fully carved. The frieze around the table is made of long, leafy spirals, and there is a lion's head in each corner. There are four winged mythical creatures with a lion's head and body, a ram's horn, and a woman's breasts. The table is decorated with Ancient Greek and Roman-style designs, typically used during the Renaissance, like the heads of Roman soldiers and the vase in the middle of the lower table structure. There are also grotesque heads and many leafy, floral motifs.

The 19th century is known as the century of “eclecticism” in decorative arts, during which artistic styles from past centuries were rediscovered and mixed together to create original objects, furnishings, and monuments. Certain styles are particularly historicist, like the Neo-Gothic style, the “neoclassical” style, and the Neo-Renaissance style. The Paris Hotel de Ville (town hall) is a prime example of French Neo-Renaissance architecture. These historicist styles were first developed in architecture, and then in interior design, for furnishings, and art objects. In this way, the Neo-Renaissance style was applied to massive tables like this one, and even to entire dining rooms.
