Pair of baskets full of fruits and flowers in sculpted stone, end of the 19th century

This remarkable pair of stone sculpture made at the end of the 19th century depicts a braided basket full of flowers and fruits. In vogue under the reign of Louis XIV, those baskets sculpted in stone were used to adorn the walls of the orchards or the pillars of a path. We can find an example of this type of decoration on the wall's pillars built along the Rue du Maréchal Joffre in the King's vegetable garden in Versailles.

Made of cast iron in the 19th century, this fireback presents a scene illustrating the fable "The Fox and the Goat" by La Fontaine. The scene depicts a fox standing on its hind legs facing a billy goat whose head is the only thing visible, the rest of its body being in the well. A pine forest is visible in the background.

Mantel with Vansittart and Crosbie coat of arms

Originating from the sumptuous Villa Salviati in Tuscany, this mantel top was created when the couple Arthur Vansittart and Diana Crosbie refurbished part of the villa's interior décor between 1844 and 1854. The villa, an important 15th-century Italian Renaissance work, was rented by the Vansittarts in 1836 before being purchased in 1844 with all its contents. They finally sold the villa in 1854, after moving many of the paintings and much of the furniture to Foots Cray Place in Kent. Our mantelpiece therefore dates from the period of occupation of the villa once purchased, between 1844 and 1854. It may be part of a redesign of some of the villa's interiors. An album of photographic views of the Villa Salviati dating from 1900-1920 shows our mantelpiece still in place in one of the rooms.

Large Louis XVI style mantel in red breche marble adorned with bronze.

This Louis XVI style fireplace is characterized by the combination of red breche marble and bronze, a blend of materials characteristic of the Louis XVI-style. The fireplace’s band is simple in form. It is adorned with a geometrical Greek frieze. The frieze is composed of circles. Each of the large circles is carved with a different flower, but all with leaves. In the smaller circles and outlines, the leafy motifs are identical. This mix of natural and antique Greek motifs is typical of the Louis XVI-style. Also typical of this style is the use of gilded bronze pearls, which on this fireplace run around the Greek frieze. The leafy motifs of the entablature are continued on the console part of the legs. Framed in a square, acanthus leaves join to form a flower with a central bud in relief. The top of the legs is curved, leaving room for scrolls on the sides. A ribbon is placed to the top of the leg, from which oak leaf offcuts and acorn cupule emerge. The rest of the leg is framed by pearls decorating the length of the foot.
