Monumental oak wood fireplace with painting on canvas depicting Joan of Arc

This large antique Neo-Renaissance style fireplace was made out of oak wood during the 19th century. Coming from the Lille region, the fireplace is decorated with a painted canvas featuring the profile of Jeanne d'Arc set in a medallion surrounded by a floral wreath. On one side of the medallion is the coat of arms of Jeanne d'Arc, made up of a sword supporting a crown and two fleurs de lys, and on the other side is the coat of arms with the cross of Lorraine which is often associated with Jeanne d'Arc. The fireplace is elaborately carved with lions' heads, columns rising to capitals, and a colonnade. An enameled faience plaque decorates the opening of the fireplace, which is decorated with dragons and foliage.

Pair of cassolettes with blowers and griffins, in Napoleon III style, in Vert de Mer, Jaune de Sienne marble and gilded bronze.

Very nice pair of antique Napoleon III style cassolettes made out of gilded and chiseled bronze, Siena yellow and sea green marbles, revealing a beautiful polychrome. The work of bronze is quite interesting, especially in the patterns of griffins and players of aulos. Wind instrument very used during the Antiquity in religious rites, the aulos is composed mainly of a pipe pierced with holes, most often played in pairs. The general shape of these cassolettes is reminiscent of the Athenian, sort of pedestal table with three high feet supporting a shelf or a basin, forming a cassolette, a burning-perfume or a basin to wash the hands. Appeared at the end of the 18th century, the Athenian is inspired by the models of antiquity found during the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Neoclassicism of the decorative vocabulary, combined with the shape of these cassolettes inspired by Antiquity and the polychromy of the materials mark well a Napoleon III style realization of high quality where eclecticism is the signature.

Pair of gilt bronze and blue and pink porcelain chandeliers dating from the Napoleon III reign

This pair of Napoleon III chandeliers in porcelain and gilt bronze was crafted in France around 1860. Each chandelier is centered around a porcelain stem, one in pink and the other in turquoise blue. From the lower level, sixteen light arms extend, following the seemingly irregular and asymmetrical curves of remarkably chiseled acanthus leaves that adorn them. The ornamentation ends at the lower part with a delicate gilt bronze pendant featuring four small flowers in relief. The differences in levels among the light fixtures, and the ornamentation with curves and counter-curves, belong to the Rocaille style, which was popular in the first part of Louis XV's reign (1723-1774). However, the curved shapes of the central porcelain shaft only appeared during the reign of Charles X (1824-1830). Thus, these objects fit perfectly into the decorative arts trends under Napoleon III (1852-1870).

J & L LOBMEYR, oriental style vase in enameled glass in the name of Mohamed

Bearing the number of Mohamed's name mirrored on its body, our vase is in keeping with the orientalist taste of the second half of the 19th century. In glass decorated with enamel and gold, our vase dates from the end of the 1870s and bears the signature of Lobmeyr. J. & L. Lobmeyr was an Austrian crystal factory of international importance, founded in 1823 and represented during the Universal Exhibitions. Famous for its crystal chandeliers and decorative objects, it supplied the Viennese imperial court, as well as the crowns of Belgium and that of Flanders. The motifs that decorate our vase are freely inspired by the ornamental repertoire of the Near East. In accordance with Eastern tradition, these motifs are non-figurative. They magnify the play of interlacing, arabesques and colors. A similar model was presented in the Lobmeyr stand in Paris during the Universal Exhibition of 1878. A similar piece is kept at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris.

BOCH Frères, Art Nouveau Vase in Iridescent Faience Decorated with a Toad and Mushrooms, late 19th century

This iridescent faience vase with a toad and mushroom motif was created by the Boch Frères manufactory in the late 19th century. In 1841, Eugène and Victor Boch founded a fine faience manufactory called Kéramis in La Louvière, Belgium. The faience factory quickly flourished and diversified its production, adapting to the stylistic and technical evolutions of the time. This particular vase is emblematic of the Art Nouveau movement, as evidenced by its asymmetrical design directly inspired by nature: the body of the vase takes the form of a tree stump. Wider and rounded at the base due to roots seemingly ready to plunge into the earth, it rises to a certain height before ending with an irregular rim. Several mushrooms, among which an agaric, grow on it, and a toad climbs at the base of the stump. The vase features an iridescent glaze transitioning from pink to violet, lightening to white on the mushrooms and darkening to brown on the toad. This glazing demonstrates the high level of mastery achieved by certain artists and the most important manufactories at the end of the 19th century. The mark under the base indicates that the manufactory had a subsidiary in Thiais, in the Seine department. A vase of the same shape but with a slightly different glaze – where pink blends with yellow-orange, green, and blue (and the toad appears black) – was noted by expert Alain Cical.
