Origin:
France, 19th century
Polychrome pâte de verre dish featuring a relief decoration of a chameleon resting on the rim. The piece is executed in shades of green, yellow and brown, and bears the signatures incised in the glass paste « AWalter / Nancy » and « Bergé Sc. ». Amalric Walter (1870–1959), French master glassmaker, is renowned for having revived and perfected the ancient technique of pâte de verre, first within the Daum glassworks in Nancy, then in his own studio from 1919 onwards. For the conception of his models, he collaborated closely with the sculptor and designer Henri Bergé (1870–1937), who devised an extensive naturalistic and animal repertoire. Their joint productions are characteristic of the transition between Art Nouveau and Art Déco, distinguished by a precise application of coloured pigments within the mould prior to firing. A restoration is noted on the crest of the chameleon.
