This decorative Japanese-style painted porcelain dish is a product of the Alphonse Giroux company, founded in 1799. Bearing a "Maison Alph. Giroux" label on the reverse, our dish can be dated to before 1867, the year Ferdinand Duvinage took over the company and began signing his pieces with the monogram FD. A horizontal handle adorned with a blue butterfly highlighted in gold runs through the center of the dish. The curved ends evoke the organic shape of a water lily leaf. The background, composed of concentric fish-scale patterns, reinforces the aquatic effect. The decoration is exclusively vegetal, featuring aquatic plants, perched birds, and stylized flowers inspired by traditional Japanese iconography. The precision of the design is reminiscent of Japanese painting, and the delicate gilding testifies to true technical mastery. This piece fits perfectly into the Japonisme vogue of the 1860s, favored by the opening of Japan to international trade from 1854 onwards.
