Dimensions
Width 21'' ⅝ 55cm
Height 24'' ⅜ 62cm
Depth: 10'' ⅝ 27cm
A striking Japonist wall clock crafted in dark carved wood, adorned with inlaid panels of deep green hardstone. The radiating fan-shaped structure is enriched with fantastical and mythological figures.
At its center, a scaly-bodied dragon-like creature grasps a silver serpent in its jaws—the sinuous serpent forming the clock’s hands. The hours are marked by white enamel cartouches set in gilt frames. Flanking each side, two grotesque hybrid creatures with bat-like wings and expressive faces enhance the dreamlike and fantastical nature of the piece.
This clock is a rare example of decorative sculpture blending Asian-inspired forms with Western imagination, reflecting the 19th-century fascination with exoticism.
