Executed around 1880, this pair of black crystal vases with a square base was produced by the Baccarat crystal works. Founded under Louis XV, the French crystal manufactory demonstrated its excellence throughout the nineteenth century at the Universal Exhibitions.
Set on a gilt bronze mount, these vases display a decoration of great poetry executed using a technique of hot enamelling in relief.
The black colour of the hyalite crystal results from the injection of slag or sulphur into the glass. The painted decoration is enhanced by the dark ground and creates a parallel with the decoration of Asian lacquerware. Branches of cherry blossom and wild geese stand out vividly against the black background.
The bronze mount, composed of four elephant heads resting on their trunks, illustrates the European taste for these objets d'art reflecting an idealised and fantastical Far East. A preparatory drawing preserved in the crystal works' archives shows a vase whose Japonisant decoration was conceived according to the same principle of imitating lacquer through black crystal.
