BACCARAT, Pair of Vases with Bamboo Decor, circa 1880

Dimensions
Width 6'' ¾  17cm
Height 11''   28cm
Depth: 4'' ⅜  11cm

Origin:
France, 20th century

Executed around 1880, this pair of vases with bamboo decoration and Japonisant landscapes is attributed to the Baccarat crystal works.

With great economy of means, the design depicting only a few plants, the decoration of the vases succeeds in evoking a lakeside landscape. In the lower register, a lotus flower and its leaves rest on the water from which bamboo branches emerge. All the elements are rendered in considerable detail. The upper register features a branch of Japanese maple appearing to burst into the composition from above. Through the flora it depicts and the space it leaves to the void in its composition, this vase draws inspiration from the Japanese print. Adapting to the vogue for Japonisme in the second half of the nineteenth century, the Baccarat crystal works created several models inspired by Far Eastern art.

The French crystal manufactory owes its international renown to its participation in the Universal Exhibitions throughout the nineteenth century. It was during this period that the manufactory distinguished itself in the eyes of the world through the excellence of its production and its constant pursuit of innovation. Its creations long influenced European glass and crystal manufactories and set the standard in terms of technique of execution and stylistic models.
