Style Napoleon III / Ref.16208

Six-light chandelier in cut crystal and gilt bronze, in the style of the Cristallerie Royale de Champagne de Bayel

Dimensions
Width 20'' ½  52cm
Height 29'' ⅞  76cm

Origin:
In the style of the Cristallerie Royale de Champagne de Bayel. Napoleon III period, second half of the 19th century.

This six-arm chandelier combines a chased gilt bronze framework with an abundant cut crystal garniture, in the characteristic style of the Cristallerie Royale de Champagne de Bayel, a Champagne manufacture founded in 1666 under the patronage of Louis XIV and brought to its apogee under the Second Empire by the Marquot family from 1853 onwards. The central shaft, composed of several superimposed elements — fluted balusters, faceted vases with flat-cut panels and a gadrooned collar — is traversed by a patinated bronze rod and crowned by a faceted spherical finial. The suspension crown is entirely dressed with garlands of round cabochons cut in rosette fashion, arranged in festoons and sinuous cascades. The gilt bronze scroll arms each carry a gadrooned bobeche and are further adorned, at the level of the shaft, with vases and small cups in cut crystal. The lower section presents an abundant garniture of pendants: scallop-edged daggers, shaped plaques, pears and faceted balls suspended from eight-pointed stars, together with square-section spires. The whole rests on a bronze crown with gadrooned decoration.
