Style Napoleon III / Ref.15642

Louis XVI-style gilt-bronze chandelier with eighteen lights, featuring a garland of roses and a ribbon bow

Dimensions

Height: 128 cm / 50'' ⅜
diameter: 117 cm / 46''

Origin:
France, 19th century

Status:
Electrified. Traces of verdigris, minor losses, and restorations. One flower on the wreath requires re-soldering.

This gilt-bronze chandelier is suspended from a large ribbon bow, with its streamers falling along the central stem and ending in tassels. Chains with rectangular links extend from the bow to support the body of the chandelier.

The central shaft is encircled by a wreath of full-blown roses, arranged in tight clusters. Below this wreath, a spray of lanceolate leaves rests upon a ring decorated with rosettes set within medallions, accented by an ovolo frieze. The shaft continues as a fluted, spiraling sheath, embellished with acanthus leaves and a cluster of roses. It terminates in a finial shaped like a pinecone, cradled within a collar of acanthus leaves.

The eighteen light-bearing arms are arranged across two tiers. Their scrolled, crook-shaped stems are adorned with acanthus leaves and support drip pans—each edged with a twisted molding—topped by fluted candle sockets.

The ribbon bow, the roses, the fluting, and the pinecone motif are all characteristic of the Louis XVI style. This aesthetic was particularly favored during the Second Empire, a period when Empress Eugénie brought the decorative arts of Marie-Antoinette’s reign back into fashion.
