Group of three winged putti in painted cast iron, after the Water Parterres of Versailles

Height 68'' ⅛  173cm
Depth: 35'' ⅞  91cm

Origin:
French, 19th century

Three winged children intertwined, caught in a spiralling movement : one raises a torch whose gilded flame crowns the composition, the others carry garlands of roses and flowing drapery. The group rests on a rocky terrace set on a square moulded base. The connection with Versailles is immediate. The Water Parterres of the château retain bronze groups commissioned under Louis XIV, executed between 1687 and 1690 after the iconographic programme drawn up by Charles Le Brun, by Tuby, Lerambert, Regnaudin and their contemporaries. Abundant curly hair, nude bodies crossed by supple drapery, torches and garlands as attributes : our group follows this formal vocabulary of the Grand Siècle point by point. During the 19th century, the great French foundries — Val d'Osne, Durenne, Barbezat — widely distributed such models in cast iron for parks and gardens of the bourgeoisie and aristocracy. Casting allowed a faithful rendering of fine details : faces, curls, folds of fabric. The old white paint, now cracked and weathered after years of outdoor exposure, speaks for itself of the long life of the piece in a garden of character. The torch retains traces of its original gilding.
