Eugène-Victor Collinot was one of the most important ceramists of the second half of the 19th century. In 1859, he and Adalbert de Beaumont published a collection of drawings inspired by oriental ornamentation, the result of their travels together in the Middle East. Several of his compositions were exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1867, including a large panel of decorative Japanese-style tiles similar to ours.
With his friend, he founded the Collinot & Compagnie earthenware factory in 1863, north of Paris. Specializing in earthenware with oriental motifs, they created pieces inspired by Turkish and Persian pottery. Our blue-ground earthenware tiles are more broadly inspired by Japanese prints and illustrate the technique invented by Collinot: relief enameling on earthenware, a technique that consists of separating the different glazes with a line called a "border." The rich polychromy of the parakeets, swallows, herons, and butterflies stands out against the turquoise background of a Japanese pond landscape. The flora, though stylized, is identifiable: blossoming cherry and plum branches, lotus flowers, and bamboo. This set of decorative plaques translates into earthenware the landscapes, fauna, and flora of Japanese prints, which were highly prized in the second half of the 19th century.
