This Neo-Gothic balustrade element in gilded and polychromed wood was executed in the 19th century.
It is organized in an asymmetrical pattern: on one side, the ornamentation, inspired by Gothic stained-glass windows, unfurls around two quadrilobes with gilded hearts, each surrounded by four trilobes. On the other side, the center is occupied by a quatrefoil set in a circle, with a four-lobed gilded decoration at its center, also surrounded by four trilobes. The balustrade is punctuated by polychrome columns crowned with gilded capitals, highlighted by a vertical groove on either side and surmounted by a small red quatrefoil.
This complex ornamentation draws its vocabulary from Gothic architecture, particularly of the 15th century, and more specifically from that of stained glass windows, multiplying openings and complex shapes.
