Style Japonism, Chinoiserie / Ref.11311

Display cabinet of Far Eastern inspiration, hexagonal form

Dimensions:

Height: 89'' ¾  228cm
Diameter: 34'' ⅝  88cm

Origin:
France, 19th century

Beautiful Japanese style showcase made in the late 19th century. In the lower part, each side is decorated with oval panels inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
Tonkin mother-of-pearl inlays are characteristic of so-called "Japanese" style furniture and attests to a practice that was quite common in the 19th century: the re-use. These inlaid panels were made in the Far East to adorn furniture. Imported in France, these panels were used by Parisian cabinetmakers at the turn of the century to decorate their own creations. The asymmetry of this piece of furniture is one of the hallmarks of Chinese and Japanese style furniture at the end of the 19th century. This piece of Far Eastern inspiration is thus quite representative of the period known as "Japonisme", which expands in Europe in the second half of the 19th century, especially under the impulse of the World's Fairs.
Hexagonal in shape, this showcase is designed as a centerpiece for displaying precious objects and works of art.
