Dimensions
Width 57'' ⅛ 145cm
Height 46'' ½ 118cm
Depth: 13'' 33cm
This Louis XVI style fireplace was made of Rouge de Rance, a Belgian marble mainly used in the decoration of the Palace of Versailles to meet the requirements of Louis XIV who wanted to use only the finest materials.
Its straight lines are quite characteristic of the sobriety and elegance of the Louis XVI style which draws its inspiration from Greek Antiquity. This desire contrasts with the opulence and curves of the Rococo style and the Louis XV period.
The ornamentation of this fireplace is also in the spirit of Louis XV. The entablature has a ram's head in its center which refers, in Greek mythology, to Jason and the Golden Fleece but also to the god of war Ares. The ram's horns are extended by simple ribbons and a branch of ivy attached to rings on the two ends of the entablature. Ribbons and ivy are decorative elements in the country taste which are recurrent in this style.
