A Bolection mixed Campan marble fireplace mantel. The marble is strikingly beautiful in the pures lines of this elegant mantel. The marble, called Campan Grand Mélange (Campan Grand Mix), has a gradation of colors from green to red. It is one of the marbles used by Louis XIV to build and decorate Versailles, notably in the Trianon and the Salon de La Paix. Such marble was quarried and used since Antiquity, but mostly in the 17th and 18th Centuries, when it was declared a royal quarry by Louis XIV.
The mantel is 17 inches deep while the mantel shelf is only 7 1/2 inches deep, because of a former restauration that included an overmantel.
