During the 19th century, the shell motif was often mixed with lush foliage. This antique Louis XV style mantel is typical of this practice. Soberly curved, the hearth opening is topped by a richly adorned entablature, where a foliage motif, embedded in the volutes of the lower molding and framed with delicate branches, is flanked on both sides by molded panels. The heads, crowned with scrolls, are each adorned with an upside down shell, from which a flower hangs. The jambs are garnished with fluting and the modillions end in volutes. The enameled insert is white.
