Antique period Louis XV mantel with rare wealth of sculpture. The canted jambs are carved with molded panels on either side of a central round medallion. They rise to scrolled heads adorned with drop oak leaves. The softly curved entablature is equally paneled with a central cartouche of Rococo inspiration. The use of Saint Maximin Breche marble is relatively exceptional. The sobriety of the cast iron original contrasts with the highly decorated and colorful mantel. However the fireback is adorned with a rare decor of a Chinese man holding a tea set and a fan - theme that was fashionable at a time when Europeans were discovering the Far East and bringing back exotic inspirations.
