Arched top cast iron fireback with a Chinoiserie theme. A the center a coconut tree full of leaves and fruit is dwarfed by tall flowers and flanked by two fishermen dressed in Chinese pajama-type clothes, wearing Chinese hats; one casts a net while the other sits with a fishing rod. Behind each of them miniature pagoda type structures clearly evoke imaginary fanciful Chinese structures.
Chinoiserie, a French term, refers to a recurring theme in European artistic styles since the seventeenth century, which reflect Chinese artistic influences. It is characterized by the use of fanciful imagery of an imaginary China, by asymmetry in format and whimsical contrasts of scale, and by the attempts to imitate Chinese porcelain and the use of lacquerlike materials and decoration.
