Pair of Sculpted Carrara Marble Sphinxes, 19th Century
Dimensions
Width 58'' ⅝ 149cm
Height 32'' ¼ 82cm
Depth: 18'' ⅞ 48cm
This pair of Carrara marble sphinxes was created based on a model by Jacques Houzeau and Louis Lerambert for the grounds of the Palace of Versailles between 1667 and 1670 (inv. 1850.8975 and 1850.8976). The imposing front legs of the chimeras extend beyond the rectangular base, and their powerful musculature contrasts with the nobility of the female face wearing a pharaonic nemes headdress. The hair is pulled back at the nape of the neck and tied with a ribbon, while hemmed strands frame the faces. The forehead is encircled by a diadem. The chimeras also wear a breastplate decorated with foliage falling over the chest and between the front legs. The tail is folded over the rump.
This monumental pair of sphinxes recalls the splendor of Versailles and the craze for the scholarly taste for archaeological references at the court of the Sun King. The Versailles sphinxes can still be seen today in the palace gardens on the south lawn. They are straddled by bronze cupids.
