This patinated cast iron statue depicts the Greek shepherd Daphnis, a symbolic figure of ancient pastoral poetry. Seated on a rock with legs crossed, he holds a flute he seems to have just stopped playing. His gaze is directed to the side, captivated by something unseen to the viewer. He wears a straw hat, a knotted animal skin around his waist, and an ornamental bracelet on his left arm. This model appears in the 1889 catalogue of the DURENNE foundry, where it is listed as a garden figure. Antoine DURENNE (1822–1895), an engineer trained at the École des arts et métiers and the École des Beaux-Arts, took over the Sommevoire foundry in 1857. Collaborating with many renowned sculptors, he quickly established his firm as a leader in the French artistic and industrial landscape. The DURENNE foundry later merged with its main competitor, the Val d’Osne foundry, in 1931.
