Napoléon III period, second half of the 19th century.

Minor omission

The Tahan firm, founded in Paris by Pierre Lambert Tahan in the early 19th century and expanded by his son Jean Pierre Alexandre (1813–1892), quickly established itself as one of the capital's most renowned cabinetmaking houses. A cabinetmaker by appointment to the Emperor and a supplier to Napoleon III, Jean Pierre Alexandre Tahan was dubbed the "Prince of Small-Scale Cabinetmaking" and was awarded a silver medal as early as 1849 at the *Exposition des produits de l'Industrie*. This solid walnut armoire, featuring a single mirrored door, is a work of exceptional craftsmanship. The pediment is enlivened by a central group—in a Baroque spirit—depicting two winged putti holding a heraldic cartouche topped by a crown. The cornice and uprights are entirely covered in high-relief naturalistic ornamentation of remarkable virtuosity: birds in flight or perched amidst leafy branches, nests, snails, bindweed flowers, and vine leaves animate every surface with a freedom of execution that foreshadows the Art Nouveau style. The spandrels surrounding the beveled mirror display scenes of wildlife rendered with great ornithological precision. The base features a panel of scrolling foliage set against a stippled background. The uprights are carved to resemble bamboo, a hallmark of the taste for exoticism during the Second Empire.
