The rich decoration of this cabinet is composed of bone and light-wood inlays set against a rosewood background. Bone marquetry, a well-established Italian tradition since the 16th century — particularly in Lombardy — is here displayed in all its virtuosity. The decorative motifs consist mainly of stars, rosettes, and chequerboards. The cabinet is divided into two sections, the upper one being removable. The lower register is flanked by columns inlaid with star motifs, while the doors are decorated with chequerboards and floral designs. The upper register is likewise framed by columns inlaid with geometric patterns. Its doors feature Neo-Classical vases from which remarkable scrolling foliage in light-wood marquetry emerges, forming a vegetal interlace connecting the various floral motifs. The sides are adorned with marquetry diamonds and a target motif. The entablature displays a frieze of pointed arches with inlaid spandrels, in a style oscillating between Gothic and Mozarabic. The fronton, richly decorated with scrolls in a baroque taste, is topped with three fanciful cups. This cabinet demonstrates the virtuosity and continuity of the Italian marquetry tradition, as well as the way 19th-century cabinetmakers adapted it to the historicist taste then in fashion. The upper section of the cabinet is removable.
