Mantle garniture in the orientalist taste in gilt-bronze with polychrome porcelain decoration

Polished and varnished bronze, polychrome porcelainThis exquisite orientalist mantle garniture was inspired by an eclectic range of decorative source materials and is characteristic of French works of art produced in the 1880s. Fashioned in gilt-bronze and ornamented with porcelain polychrome plaques decorated with vegetal scrolls and cartouches inspired by Iznik enamels, the clock takes the form of a piece of miniature architecture. The clock face is framed by two columns whose capitals support an open foliated pediment directly inspired by Islamic monuments. The clock is accompanied by a pair of vases of Byzantine form, the sides of which are encircled with a porcelain band that echoes the clock’s decoration. The body of the vases is also ornamented with chased bronze of the highest quality. This beautifully chased bronze work comprises palmettos of stylized organic shapes and delicate scrollwork. Certain of the bronze elements are executed in openwork, such as the handles of the vases.    Although not signed, this garniture is inscribed “Paris” under the face of the clock, indicating that this exceptional piece was the work of a French manufacturer. Created around 1880, this set is characteristic of the taste for eclecticism, the divergent sources used and the wide ornamental vocabulary taken from many different periods and continents that created this arresting and original work of art.

Maison des Bambous Alfred PERRET et Ernest VIBERT (attributed to) - Far Eastern inspired display cabinet

The realization of this charming Japanese-inspired cabinet is attributed to the Maison des Bambous by Perret et Vibert. The lower part opens with two doors adorned with panels decorated with Japanese characters in ivory marquetry, bone and mother-of-pearl, and two drawers adorned with horse warriors inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The upper part opens to a door and a drawer adorned with friezes of mother-of-pearl and is embellished with shelves. The whole is surmounted by a display cabinet opening by a glass door surrounded by a geometric frieze of mother-of-pearl, discovering a shelf stretched with red fabric.

Ferdinand BARBEDIENNE (attributed to) - Gilded bronze set clock in the taste of Japan

This set clock, attributed to Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892), was made in the 19th century. The base of the candelabrum and the clock rests on feet in the shape of elephant heads. The design of the feet and the presence of the symbol evoking the Shu ideogram are characteristic of the production of Édouard Lièvre (1828-1886), a leading figure in Japanese art in France.

This superb ornamental dish with a Japanese-style decor of koi carps was executed by the Jules Vieillard & Cie Manufacture in the 1870s. After the death of Jules Vieillard in 1868, the Jules Vieillard & Cie Manufacture, then the third largest ceramic factory in France, passed to his sons, Albert and Charles. The Vieillard brothers then developed new designs and shapes, launching a production of artistic faience intended to decorate the finest interiors.

Initially a ceramics trader, Jules Vieillard worked for the David Johnston manufactory in Bordeaux from 1840. When it went bankrupt in 1844, he decided to buy it and founded the company Jules Vieillard & Cie, which enjoyed great success. After his death in 1868, the manufactory, then the third largest ceramics manufactory in France, passed to his sons, Albert and Charles. The Vieillard brothers then developed new designs and shapes. They launched a production of artistic earthenware intended to decorate the finest interiors, which continued until the end of the 19th century. After the death of Jules Vieillard in 1868, the Jules Vieillard & Cie Manufacture, then the third largest ceramic factory in France, passed to his sons, Albert and Charles. The Vieillard brothers then developed new designs and shapes, launching a production of artistic faience intended to decorate the finest interiors.

Japanese-style daybed – Maison des Bambous

Rectangular daybed in carved blackened wood, resting on four scroll feet. The two ends are built as box compartments with double doors opening onto storage space. The surface is decorated in low relief with geometric, vegetal, and Asian-inspired patterns distributed across the legs, side panels, and apron. This piece is part of the production of Far Eastern–style furniture developed in France during the late 19th century, notably by the Maison des Bambous, founded by Perret & Vibert. A small ivory-like plaque is screwed on the back, inscribed: “Maison des Bambous – 170 Boulevard Haussmann – Paris.”

La Sortie du bain – Young woman, monumental Art Deco sculpture in the style of Félix-Pascal Févola

Graceful and slender, this monumental white marble sculpture perfectly embodies the elegance of 1930s Art Deco, in the style of the French sculptor Félix-Pascal Févola (1882–1953). Entitled La Sortie du bain (The Bath Exit), it depicts a young woman captured in a suspended moment, radiating calm and restrained sensuality. Her body, frontally composed, rises with refined verticality. The arms extend gently backward, fingertips brushing the marble, while her uplifted face—eyes closed and lips slightly parted—suggests serene introspection. The stylized geometric hairstyle evokes the Egyptomania typical of decorative sculpture from the interwar period. Originally intended for a garden or a grand interior, this piece captivates with its formal purity, delicate modeling, and quiet poetic presence. The white stone enhances the softness of the lines while affirming the figure’s sculptural power.

Ferdinand BARBEDIENNE – Japonist cachepot in gilt bronze and cloisonné enamel

This skillful blend of Chinese art and French craftsmanship is attributed to Ferdinand Barbedienne. Our cachepot features a polychrome decoration of peonies and stylized flowers, wild birds, and insects in cloisonné enamel against a turquoise background. On one side, a pair of wild birds frolic, while on the other, butterflies flutter across the azure ground. The copper network of the cloisonné enamels displays geometric patterns reminiscent of certain Chinese vases from the Jiaqing period (1796-1820). A common practice in French decorative arts during the second half of the 19th century, the Chinese cachepot is mounted on a modern bronze base inspired by Far Eastern designs. Given the exceptional and original bronze work, this piece can be attributed to Ferdinand Barbedienne. The base is formed by three finely chiseled elephant heads adorned with a pearl diadem. Greek key motifs unfold along the base, while a tortoise appears between each elephant head. On either side of the cachepot, lion heads grasp movable handles. The manes of these menacing masks with their mischievous noses form finely chiseled scrolls. On the shoulder of the cachepot, four grimacing faces in gilt bronze punctuate the polychrome enamel floral decorations. The rim is adorned with a repeating Far Eastern motif reminiscent of the decoration found on Buddhist temple cornices.
