"Venus and Vulcan", very beautiful pair of gilt bronze andirons on a Rocaille base

This very beautiful pair of Louis XV style andirons was made in the 19th century. Chiselled in gilt bronze , it depicts the goddess of Love, Venus, and her husband Vulcan, god of fire and forges, both well adapted to keep the flames of the hearth. Shoulders covered under capes, they are seated on rocks of Vulcan's house, under Mount Etna. The beauty of Venus is underlined by her thick hair and the two characters are very expressive.

Series of three curved and painted panels with Chinoiseries decoration

These three curved panels were made of wood in the 19th century. They are each adorned with a painted decoration depicting scenes of the daily Chinese life as it was the trend under the reign of Louis XV. The Chinoiseries which are an European artistic model characterized by the representation of an imaginary China as it is described in Roman Ancient time of a " fair and peaceful population that is leaving happy days in a pleasures country", were spread in the arts and know a true rise in the midlle of the 18th century. The Rococo painter François Boucher was a spacialist of this kind of representations.

Founded during the reign of Louis XV, the Baccarat crystal glassworks owes its international reputation to its participation in major exhibitions throughout the 19th century and up until 1937. It was during this period that the factory gained worldwide acclaim for the excellence of its production and its constant pursuit of innovation, which earned it numerous medals. Its achievements influenced other European glass and crystal manufacturers in the following decades, setting the standard for execution techniques and stylistic models. Baccarat was one of the first to produce Japanese-style pieces, of which these vases are a fine example.
