Big antique fireback with jansenist decoration

This large 18th century fireback wears the Jansenist badge representing the three Theological Virtues. Faith is thus depicted as a blindfolded woman while Hope is represented by an anchor and Charity by a flaming heart. A Latin inscription runs along this medallion "Ardet Amans Spe Nixa Fides" which means "Faith, relied on Hope, burning with the fire of Charity." This sentence appeared in the frontispiece of all Jansenists books. Finally, the medallion is surrounded on all sides by the Cardinal Virtues : Fortitude, Justice, Temperance and Prudence.

Pair of Japanese-blackened wooden frames decorated with embroidered silk

This pair of frames was made out of black wood around 1880-1890. Their wooden frame, decorated according to a Far East style, is made up of openwork friezes. In their upper part, the two frames are decorated with a calligraphic inscription, inspired by the Far East. The two frames are crowned by two winged dragons facing each other. The frames have medallions with a silk embroidered border, recovered with convex glass. Delicately embroidered, the silk is decorated with wild animals among a vegetal environment. These two frames are characteristic of the Far East trend which came to Europe at the end of the 19th century, in particular a trend towards Japanese and Chinese style. Made by a French artist, unfortunately anonymous, they are the privileged evidence of a profound taste for exoticism. The high quality of this pair of frames makes them very original and rare.

Set of stained glass windows from the 1930s, consisting of six large arched pieces (H. 100.79 inch, W. 61.02 inch), one narrower piece (H. 96.85 inch, W. 40.94 inch), two smaller pieces (H. 72.05 inch, W. 40.55 inch), one very small piece (H. 56.1 inch, W. 37.01 inch) and two round pieces (diameter 48.43 inch).

Small stained-glass window with an Art Deco decoration, circa 1940

This small window shows a beautiful stained-glass decoration characteristic of the 1930-1940's, composed of geometric forms, straight and slightly curved lines in blue and ochre shades. The art of stained-glass window in the beggining of the 20th century knows a comeback, the glassmakers adapt themselve to an achitecture based on metal offering new possibilites to be free from the religious architecure.

"The Tea", fireback after François Boucher, 18th century

This fireback is a 19th century edition based on an 18th century model. A Chinese character serves tea with a small monkey. The decoration is inspired by a drawing by François Boucher (1703-1770). A fireback of the same model furnishes a fireplace hearth located at the Grand Trianon at Versailles Palace.
