Beautiful antique Empire style fireplace in Sea Green marble with bronze ornaments

This beautiful antique Empire style fireplace was made out of Vert de Mer marble towards the end of the 19th century. Two detached colums make up the jambs of this antique fireplace. The entablature is decorated with the following gilded bronze ornaments: women's heads set in medallions, foliage, and rosettes.

This beautiful antique Victorian style fireplace is an English model made in the late 19th century. It is made of Carrara Statuary marble and Vert d'Estours marble, whose inlays contrast with the whiteness of the Statuary marble and highlight the straight lines. This fireplace is adorned with fine sculptures. The fluted jambs are thus decorated with Greek-inspired vases at the top and the frieze is adorned with rosettes and a large bowl at its center surrounded by branches with flowers.

This large antique urn in French granite was made in the mid 19th century. The urn is decorated with a molded decoration and is on a pedestal whose lower part presents delicately carved patterns. One of the sides of the pedestal is adorned on its central part with carved volutes and geometric shapes.

Japanese style cylinder desk made in the late 19th century. It is decorated with traditional Asian scenes and floral motifs inlaid with mother-of-pearl and ivory. The desk is based on four claw feet, joined by a stretcher.

Antique bed of Far Eastern inspiration with engraved and inlaid bone decoration

Antique Japanese style bed decorated with birds, branches, butterflies and a Japanese character carrying a burden of wood on his back made out of engraved and inlaid bone. Very nice quality of the decor, especially in the realism and precision of the details. The headboard is adorned on its pediment with a dragon carved in the round. The asymmetry of forms is quite characteristic of the taste for Japanism in furniture in the second half of the 19th century.

BACCARAT CRISTALLERIE and Eugène ROUSSEAU (model by), Pair of vases « Clair de Lune » in blue crystal and gilt bronze mount, circa 1875-1890

This pair of blue crystal vases with hot-enamelled decoration is mounted in a gilt bronze base representing branches of cherry blossom. These vases were produced by the Baccarat crystal works between 1875 and 1890 after a design by Eugène Rousseau (1827-1890). This is the « Clair de lune » (Moonlight) model, whose Japonisant decoration depicts a weeping willow set within a full moon. The neck and the base are highlighted with a fine gilded line. The two vases are presented on a gilt bronze mount with four feet representing branches of cherry blossom. François-Eugène Rousseau (1827-1890), known as Eugène Rousseau, was a master glassmaker established from 1855 as a dealer specialising in porcelain and faience in Paris. In 1867, having developed an interest in Japonisant motifs, Eugène Rousseau commissioned Félix Bracquemond to produce a porcelain service intended for display at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, where for the first time a European artist directly copied a Japanese artist, reproducing animal figures from Hokusai's Manga. His Japonisant glassware, produced with the probable collaboration of the Appert brothers at Clichy and the Baccarat crystal works, was presented in 1874 in Paris at the fourth Exhibition of the Union centrale des Beaux-arts appliqués à l'industrie. A member of the Union centrale des Arts décoratifs from its foundation in 1862, Eugène Rousseau was awarded the cross of the Légion d'honneur. The Baccarat crystal works owes its international renown to its participation throughout the nineteenth century and up to 1937 in the Universal Exhibitions. It was during the nineteenth century that the manufactory distinguished itself in the eyes of the world through the excellence of its production and its constant pursuit of innovation. Its creations long influenced European glass and crystal manufactories and set the standard in terms of technique of execution and stylistic models. The works of the crystal manufactory were very rarely signed before 1860, the year in which the first labels appeared sporadically, and fifteen years later the stamp bearing the name of the crystal works on certain blown models and bronze parts.

Anonymous, Bronze statue of a Eurasian eagle-owl clutching a snake, late 19th-early 20th century

This impressive sculpture of a Eurasian eagle-owl clutching a snake is striking for its stern, intimidating gaze. It shows all its determination in the fight it is waging against its prey. The snake, imprisoned by the large bird, continues to struggle and displays its best weapon: sharp teeth that contain a deadly venom for its attacker. The height of the statue and the Great Horned Owl's partially outstretched wings give the piece a powerful character. We found a lamp and an old wire inserted inside the space, allowing the bird's eyes to be lit from behind. The opening on the bronze indicates that the piece was meant to be lit up from the very beginning. The owl's eyes, made of glass, add light to the otherwise very dark piece. The artist wanted them to be the focal point that catches the eye of the viewer. This decorative sculpture is exceptional in that it was sand-cast in a single piece, whereas this process normally requires the piece to be produced in two pieces that are then assembled. This shows the high quality of workmanship on the part of the creators of the decorative piece. The only added element is the upper part of the snake held in place by a visible key. The question remains: could this very special object be the chief model?
