Ormolu mounted and red cloisonne enamel cache-pot

This quadrilobed cache-pot was made during the last quarter of the 19th century.Even if it was inspired by chinese artworks, it is a french production.This cloisonne enameled is decorated with polychrome butterflies and peonies on a red background, with a tao-tie inspired gilded pattern.This type of object is often produced on a blue background, it is pretty rare to find a red one, like our model.The openwork ormulu mounted is present on the top, the base and the handles.

Series of sculpted face and decorative elements in Sun stone of the Ardennes, late 19th century

This series of Neo-Renaissance mural sculptures was made in the late 19th century in Sun stone from the Ardennes, also called stone of Dom. They were originally adorning the facade of a Belgian building. This stone with a very typical yellow color comes from the Dom Le Mesnil quarries which had provide the substance of many constructions such as the Place ducale in Charleville-Mézières for instance. Its exploiting was ended in 1951. Our series of sculptures is composed of eight high relief portraits, four men and four women, dressed in the Renaissance style, and three faces of old men made in the grotesque style that we could find in abundance in the decor during the Renaissance period. We also add a series of architectural decorations in the same style, with cartouche and medallion.

Mathurin Moreau for the Val d’Osne Foundry, The Four Elements, between 1849 and 1879

The son and brother of sculptors, Mathurin Moreau (Dijon, 1822-Paris, 1912) is one of the most reknown sculptors in the 19th century. He won the Second Prix de Rome at the age of 21. He worked for the Val d’Osne art foundry between 1849 and 1879. He won numerous prizes at the Salons and at the Universal Exhibitions; in 1897, he was awarded a medal of honour at the Salon. The sculptor was also a committed public figure: he published an essay on poverty in 1851 and was elected mayor of the 19th arrondissement in Paris in 1878. He created the Four Elements as part of his collaboration with the Val d’Osne art foundry at the end of the 19th century. The elements are personified by putti endowed with various attributes and accompanied by animals or objects echoing the element they evoke. Air, with its cheeks puffed out, blows into a foghorn; it sits on the body of a lamb with its eyes closed. Water is crowned with a reed and holds a long stick; the putto is riding a large sea turtle. Fire is holding a lighted lamp. He places his foot on a salamander, an animal reputed to be able to pass through flames without damage, or even to be engendered by fire. Lastly, Earth is crowned with a pampre and holds a bunch of grapes in one hand and a sheaf of wheat in the other. She is placing her foot on a wineskin. The artist’s eye for detail is visible in the different treatment of each putto’s hair. While Earth’s hair is natural, Air’s is made up of swirling curls and pulled back as if by a strong wind; Water's hair is soggy and almost similar to seaweed, while Fire’s imitates flames. Our set appears in the catalogue of the Société anonyme des grands fourneaux et fonderies du Val d’Osne. In 1878, a Four Elements fountain was erected in Valence, based on a model similar to the one in the foundry’s catalogue: the four statues in the lower basin are identical to ours.

BACCARAT, Pair of Vases With Peacock, Rooster and Wader, circa 1880

Founded during the reign of Louis XV, the Baccarat crystal glassworks owes its international reputation to its participation in major exhibitions throughout the 19th century and up until 1937. It was during this period that the factory gained worldwide acclaim for the excellence of its production and its constant pursuit of innovation, which earned it numerous medals. Its achievements influenced other European glass and crystal manufacturers in the following decades, setting the standard for execution techniques and stylistic models. Baccarat was one of the first to produce Japanese-style pieces, of which these vases are a fine example.

This overmantel is made of gilded wood. The mirror takes up most of the space, leaving only the frame and its upper part decorated. The frame is composed of a first pearl frame, a motif often used under Louis XVI. This is followed by a second frame with a repeating motif of scrolls meeting in the center and encompassing an ear of wheat. At the corners of the overmantel, a leaf does the junction between the two directions (vertical and horizontal), and a flower motif is created by an arrangement of leaves in the inner corner of the frame. The overmantel is adorned with a crown of roses sealed by a bow, two motifs typical of the Louis XVI style.
