TAHAN: Malachite and Marble Inkwell

 The discreet refinement of this very elegant piece comes from the materials used. Here Black Belgium marble, highly appreciated for its purity and fine texture allowing for a perfect finish, is inlaid with malachite and adorned with finely chiseled gilded bronze. The contrast between the depth of the black and the intensity and luminosity of the green stone is striking.The body of the inkwell rests on a round plate. The sides of the plate curve up and are a decorated with a geometrical frieze underlining the edge, and its center, which rises to support the inkwell, is surrounded by a design of four linked arrows. The ogee curved stand of the inkwell is gilded bronze; it is ringed and rises to support the remarkably polished marble bowl. The bases of the vertical handles are adorned with bronze ram heads topped with acanthus leaves and show an exquisite delicacy of carving. The high point of the handles level off and form a flower blossom in a square.  The handles then split and link to the inkwell in a floral motif, bringing lightness to the composition. The top of the bowl is short, adorned with a frieze that echoes the one on the plate below. A gilded frieze around the opening of the bowl and the cover links the two esthetically and hides the hinge. Two malachite circles underline the cover, which is crowned with a gilded flower blossom.

Important pair of bronze candelabra, 1868

This important pair of bronze candelabra is signed and dated "COLONEL / Fondeur à Lyon 1868". The candelabra present a fluted shaft placed on a gadrooned base and decorated with flowers, surmounted by a capital with scrolls and acanthus leaves, inspired by the composite order. The lyre-shaped hearth supports a dome crowned by a succession of buildings.

Cast iron fireback with the wedding coat of arms of Joseph-François de Montecler et Hyacinthe Menon de Turbilly. Joseph-François de Montecler, marquis of Montecler, (1694-1766) married in 1716 Hyacinthe Menon de Turbilly (1699-1742), lady of La Rongère, of who the marquis de Sourches praised the beauty.

Small Louis XV period mantel in Violet Breccia marble

This small mantel was made of a beautiful Violet Breccia marble in the late 18th century. Typical of the Louis XV style, its serpentine header is adorned with a beautiful sculpted shell underlined by an oblong moulding that goes down the jambs. In the 18th century, the mantel's sides were not built, our mantel's ones were made later in a modern stone. They could be painted in faux marble

GUERET Frères - Splendid oak chest richly sculpted with a forest animal decoration

This splendid chest was made of oak by the Guéret brothers in the 1870. The sculpture work is truly remarkable and shows the virtuosity of its creator who makes a decor on the forest theme in which we can see a fox, a pheasant or even a bird with its wings spread out on the top, in a rocks and tree decoration. Denis-Désiré (born in 1828) and Onésime Guéret (born in 1830) create a factory of sculpted furniture in 1852 or 1853 at 7 rue Buffault in Paris under the name "Guéret Frères". Ten years later, the store is moved at 5 boulevard de la Madeleine, then at 216 rue Lafayette where it stays until the definitive closure. From 1877, the factory is managed by the youngest brother and becomes "Guéret Jeune et Cie", its activity continues until the end of the 19 th century.The Guéret brothers participate to each exhibitions from 1855, win a lot of rewards and acritic always eulogistic,like the one published in the Art Journal, about the InternationalExhibition of 1878 : “M. Gueret, a renowned cabinet-maker of Paris, contributed to theExhibition a large number of admirable works, designed with rare Art power, and executed with refined delicacy, in various woods – generally in satin-wood inlaid – all possessing thorough artistic merit”. The excellency of their work for the sculpted furniture making,often rewarded, increases their orders book. Rich bourgeois but also renowned personalities such as the Duke of Aumale, Napoléon III or even Mr Bryce, buyers of these sumptuous furniture, made some orders. Mr Bryce, for instance, ordered the realization of his whole furniture for his mansion on avenue Gabriel in Paris.

Large fireback "Danaë et the golden rain"

This large fireback was made of cast iron in the 19th century. It is adorned with a Louis XV style decoration with motif of shells, acanthus leaves and braces. On the center are depicting Zeus and Danaë. the god in love with her changes himself into a golden rain to make love to her. From this union was born Perseus.
