Louis XV period gilded trumeau with sconces and decorated with a painting

This wooden overmantel is from the Louis XV period. It is composed of several frames, including a mirror, a painting, and sconces. The frame of the mirror is adorned with numerous leaves and small flowers, forming a symmetrical design. At the top center of the mirror is a shell surrounded by numerous small volutes. The presence of the shell changes the direction of the frame's lines, creating curves and counter-curves. This frame is attached to the painting frame by two links. The frame of the painting uses the same motifs as the one below, but this time the top is adorned with a palmette surrounded by numerous flowers and curved lines of acanthus leaves and shells. This frame surrounds a painting of four putti forging arrows in a cave. On the overmantel are two symmetrical sconces, created from the leaf motifs of the frames. These sconces are framed by moldings that end in scrolls. At the bottom of the moldings, bouquets emerge from shells. At the top are shells from which a waterfall of three flowers emerges.

Auguste Clésinger, Bust of a Woman or Flora

Notre buste de femme en marbre blanc est l’œuvre du sculpteur français Auguste Clésinger (1814-1883). Le personnage se présente de face, la tête tournée de trois-quarts vers sa gauche. Le buste nu est ceint d’un ruban savamment froissé portant la signature de l’artiste « J. CLESINGER ». Le jeu des mèches bouclées laisse apparaître de manière éparse dans la chevelure des roses et autres fleurs. L’amalgame né de l’apparence d’un portrait réaliste – traitement soigné de la coiffure, traits individualisés – et les attributs floraux renvoie aussi bien à un portrait idéalisé qu’à une représentation de la nymphe Flore. Notre buste peut être rapproché de la Dame aux roses du même Clésinger, conservée au Musée d’Orsay (inv. RF 1781) qui porte sur la poitrine un regroupement de roses. Portrait de dame ou allégorie de la Beauté ou du Printemps ; en l’absence de nom gravé, le cordon stylisé et la présence des fleurs invitent à penser qu’il s’agit plutôt d’une allégorie. Comparable au Buste de Flore (vente Sotheby’s 10 juillet 2019), notre buste évoque un type de sculpture qui séduit encore certains clients fortunés dans la France du milieu du XIXe siècle.
