Beautiful antique Empire style fireplace in Sea Green marble with bronze ornaments

This beautiful antique Empire style fireplace was made out of Vert de Mer marble towards the end of the 19th century. Two detached colums make up the jambs of this antique fireplace. The entablature is decorated with the following gilded bronze ornaments: women's heads set in medallions, foliage, and rosettes.

Antique cast iron fireback with French coat of Arms and angels

This cast iron fireback from the 18th century is elaborately decorated. In the centre, there is a medallion containing three fleurs de lys and is framed by two intertwined palm leafs. On either side, two angels are blowing on a trumpet and hold onto the royal crown.

"The Crimean Battle", antique cast iron fireback

Small fireback made out of cast iron in the 20th century. It represents a wounded soldier during an episode of the Crimean War, a conflict between the Russian Empire and a coalition of the Ottoman Empire, the Empire of Napoleon III, the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Sardinia, 1854-1856. It is triggered by the fear of the declining Ottoman Empire fall to Russian expansionism.

Beautiful antique cast iron fireback with the Jannon family coat of arms, 18th century

This beautiful antique Louis XV style fireback was made in the 18th century. It presents the coat of arms of the Jannon family: Gules with three cinquefoils of silver. Two griffons are on both sides, the whole is surmounted by a Marquis crown. It may be a fireback for Jean Jannon, who died in 1726, an honorary councilor at the Burgundy Parliament.

Cast iron fireback with the wedding coat of arms of Abel-Claude-Marthe-Marie-Cécile de Vichy, said the marquis de Vichy (8th of october 1740 - shot down on the 15th of october 1793 in Lyon), comte de Champrond, guidon des gendarmes de Bourgogne et du Berry en 1769, chevalier de Saint-Louis with Claude-Josèphe-Marie de Saint-Georges (21st of november 1742 - 26th january 1775), married on the 5th of december 1764. "L'Amour d'Hercule", beautiful Louis XV period cast iron fireback

This antique large fireback was made in the 18th century. In a beautiful Louis XV decoration composed of shells, acanthus leaves and scrolls, a scene is represented depicting Heracles's loves as indicates the inscription, there it is "Heracles and Omphale". After his works and the madness that made him kill his family, Heracles is submitted by the Delphi oracle to a a year of servitude, to pay for his fault. Thus, he is bought by Omphale, queen of Lydia. Heracles is here represented spinning the wool, spindle and distaff in hand, kneeling down in front of Omphale and another woman. A similar model is illustrated in Henri Carpentier's book "Firebacks", while an other one is visible in the Louvre Museum.

Antique cast iron fireback with the French coat of arms of the 18th century

This exceptionally large fireback with the French coat of arms was made in the 18th century century. In the centre of a frame are the main arms, azure with three golden fleurs-de-lys, topped by a royal crown. They are surrounded by two palm leaves joined at the ends by a ribbon. At the four corners of the frame, four fleurs-de-lys point towards the centre. The edge of the frame is adorned with a decorative frieze. On the outside, the arms of France are again depicted six times, in a smaller scale; those in the upper corners of the plaque face the corners of the frame.

Cast iron fireback with the crowned arms of France

Cast iron fireback with the coat of arms of the House of Bourbon, a royal house of French origin that became a major dynasty in Europe, with kings in Spain (Navarre), France, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and Parma. Bourbon kings ruled in France from 1589 until the French Revolution, and for short periods thereafter. The coat of arms consists of a crown surmounting a medallion adorned with three fleur-de-lys, symbol of purity and royalty. The palm leaves on either side of the medallion symbolise victory.

Rare pair of winged lions, cast iron, 19th century

Although called "griffins" by the artist and in the foundry's catalogue, they are rather a pair of winged lions, as evidenced by the absence of bird beaks, in cast iron and made by the Ducel or Val d'Osne foundry at the end of the 19th century after a model by Eugène-Louis Lequesne. Le Monde illustré, 18 juillet 1863, pp. 13-16. Initially designed to be part of the decoration of the current Musée de Picardie in Amiens as part of the project for the exterior and interior decoration of the museum by the architect Arthur Diet, these two winged lions, known as "griffins", were commissioned in 1861 by Diet to the sculptor Eugène-Louis Lequesne. In a letter from the architect dated 31 December 1861 addressed to a commission, Diet specified that E. Lequesne: "will make a sketch of them but on condition that these animals (be made) after the antique. If we wanted animals copied from nature, he would not interfere". On 8 February 1861, Lequesne submitted his model, which he exhibits at the 1863 Salon. These "griffins" were drawn by Lequesne after the antique and were included in the catalogue of the Ducel or Val d'Osne foundry at the end of the 19th century. Very popular, this model was delivered in several countries as orders for monuments or outdoor decorations were received. This model can be found in two of the foundry's catalogues : Ducel Val d’Osne catalogue, Folio 405 – Plate 238, N° 10613 and N° 10613 bis. Eugène-Louis Lequesne (1815-1887) was a French sculptor, student of James Pradier, he exhibited his work at the Salon from 1842. He was awarded of the First Prize of Rome in 1844 and had already won second place in 1843. Brilliant sculptor, he was nominated as knight of the Legion of Honour in 1855 and regularly exhibited his work at the Salon, including the model for our sculptures. Many of his works, including the famous "Dancing Faun", adorn public spaces. The figure of the winged lion dates back to the ancient period. This period provided famous examples such as the "Winged Lion of Vulci" from the Etruscan civilisation. In the ancient Greco-Roman world, from which the models that inspired Lequesne were made, artistic representations of the lion were very frequently associated with the figure of the guardian, both of the world of the living and dead. This pair of winged lions is associated with the 19th century taste for both Antiquity and representations of the fantastic. Other sculptors of Lequesne's time produced similar sculptures, such as the chimeras of Henri-Alfred Jacquemart or the statue of the winged lion by Auguste-Nicolas Cain.
