A native of Bordeaux, Pierre Marcel-Béronneau entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1892, where he studied under Gustave Moreau. Over the course of his career, he received official commissions while also developing a Symbolist body of work whose themes, subjects, and even painterly technique were deeply influenced by Moreau. Marcel-Béronneau exhibited regularly at the Salon between 1895 and 1914. This work is a mixed technique (watercolor and oil paint), a subject the artist treated on several occasions. A sultry female figure, Salomé is a biblical anti-heroine particularly favored by Symbolist artists. Marcel-Béronneau sets his figure against a blue background from which vegetal motifs emerge, rendered in a manner reminiscent of Moreau, along with the platter upon which Herodias’s daughter presented the head of John the Baptist. The supernatural radiance of the platter, placed upright, and Salomé’s vacant gaze emphasize the absence of the central narrative element. Salomé’s pearly body is executed in watercolor, contrasting with the iridescent draperies heightened in oil. The artist has added a painted Marie-Louise mount framing the composition, further enhancing the central figure: a blue vegetal frieze enriched with touches of gold leaf. This mixed media work on paper is signed lower left.
