Rare large Empire period frame with several decorative friezes. The first band decorated towards the inside is adorned with alternating bees and stars, and palmettes in the corners. The upper frieze is decorated with a frieze of palmettes and plant motifs. The frame is made of wood and is keyed.
The decoration of this large frame is typical of the portrait frames of the aristocracy in the Empire period. The presence of bees may indicate that the subject represented was related to the emperor himself or to the imperial family. They can be found decorating the throne of Napoleon Bonaparte planned for the Château de Saint-Cloud, which is kept in the Louvre Museum in Paris. This type of frame can be seen around paintings by the great masters of the Empire period such as Baron Jean Gros.
