Executed around 1880, this garniture with Japonisant landscapes is signed on the bronze mount with the stamp of the Baccarat crystal works. Founded under Louis XV, the French crystal manufactory demonstrated its excellence throughout the nineteenth century at the Universal Exhibitions.
This ruby crystal garniture comprises two vases and a jardinière set on gilt bronze mounts. The ensemble is representative of the quality of the crystal works' production, combining elegance of form with the fineness of enamelled decoration. Each vase depicts a Japonisant landscape featuring characteristic fauna and flora. On the vases, tall trees framing a body of water are accompanied by wading birds typical of Japanese art. The elongated form of the jardinière lends itself particularly well to the depiction of an aquatic landscape overflown by wild geese. On the reverse, a large sun emerges from a mountainous background. The handles in clear crystal are adorned with gilded decorative motifs.
