Style Napoleon III / Ref.15773

Napoleon III period openwork wrought-iron double door with its frame.

Dimensions
Width: 136.5 cm / 53'' ¾
Height: 249 cm / 98''
Depth: 6 cm / 2'' ⅜

Origin:
France, 19th century

Status:
Good overall condition; later black paint. Handle missing from the back.

This double-leaf door features openwork ornamentation arranged in three vertical registers per leaf, separated by straight bars. The design relies on the repetition of a single motif: circles enclosing a quatrefoil—formed by scrolls with knob-like terminals—alternate with counter-curved frames, each centering a stylized acanthus leaf. C-scrolls punctuate the junctions between these elements, lending the entire piece a sense of continuous movement from top to bottom.

The leaves are backed by glazed panels, allowing the ironwork design to be fully visible. The door secures via a mortise lock operated by a twisted-iron handle with a curved grip. It is supplied with its door frame and hinges, facilitating its reuse.

The stylistic blend of Neo-Gothic inspired quatrefoils and classical foliage is characteristic of Second Empire eclecticism—a period that saw the widespread adoption of decorative ironwork in apartment buildings and private townhouses.
