DECK Théodore, monumental oak mirror with green glazed faience medallions

Dimensions
Width 26'' ¾  68cm
Height 67'' ¾  172cm

Monumental carved oak mirror in the historicist style, adorned with six green glazed faience medallions attributed to Théodore Deck (1823–1891). The massive oak structure is richly carved with motifs such as shells, acanthus leaves, rosettes, and gadrooned friezes, evoking a neo-Renaissance aesthetic. The crest is decorated with a large stylized scallop shell flanked by foliage, and the moulded frame features decorative studs.

Two Gothic-style inscriptions curve above the arched mirror: “MAIS OU SONT” and “LES NEIGES D’ANTAN”, a famous line by François Villon from his Ballade des dames du temps jadis (15th century).

The green-glazed ceramic medallions, inspired by Italian Renaissance art, depict various profiles and allegorical scenes. The Latin inscriptions read:
LEONELLVS MARCHIO ESTENSIS
OPVS PISANI PICTORIS
PISANI POPVLI SPECIMEN

These medallions can be linked to Théodore Deck’s work and his collaborations with 19th-century historicist artists. This mirror is a striking example of late 19th-century eclectic taste, blending medieval references with Renaissance humanism.
