Style Louis XIV / Ref.15635

Pair of stone flower baskets

Dimensions
Width 17'' ¾  45cm
Height 29'' ⅛  74cm
Depth: 21'' ⅝  55cm

This pair of stone sculptures made in the mid-18th century represents a woven basket filled with flowers, fruits and plants.

Among the elements chosen by the artist, we can distinguish among others sunflowers, buttercups, bunches of grapes, lemons, small pumpkins and ears of wheat.

Very fashionable under Louis XIV, these filled baskets sculpted in stone were often used to decorate the walls of orchards or the pillars on either side of an alley. Our pair of sculptures was actually placed on pillars. We find in particular an example of this type of ornament on the pillars of the walls built all along the rue du Maréchal Joffre in the Potager du Roi at the Palace of Versailles.
