Charles MATIFAT, Vases assyriens, avant 1851
Dimensions:
Width: 11'' 28cm
Height: 22'' ½ 57cm
Origin:
France, 19th century
This pair of bronze vases was executed by Charles Matifat in the years preceding 1851.
Charles Stanislas Matifat was a French founder. He took over his father’s business and participated in the National Exhibition of Industrial Products in 1849 and the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, where he received a silver medal.
Each vase rests on a circular marble base. Their feet are adorned with stylized palmettes and female figures inspired by frescoes engaging in music and dance. The upper part flares like a bowl and is decorated with a frieze of horned and winged fantastic animals, followed by a warrior procession. At the top, two Assyrian-style sphinxes form handles.
These ornamental vases are emblematic of the 19th-century artistic interest in Eastern cultures and their archeology, following the numerous 18th century rediscoveries in this field.
These vases were presented by the artist at the Great Exhibition of 1851; an engraving was published on this occasion in The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue. The Industry of All Nations.
