This sandstone vase, supported by a base, decorated with two Putti figurines and Hercules carved in high-relief. Hercules holds up the whole of the vase, thanks to his legendary strength. Hercules has the face of an old bearded man yet he has very well developed muscles, giving him an imposing appearance. He is lying on the skin of a Nemean Lion. Omphale is on the vase's paunch. She is lying on a drape, and with her right hand, she points at the club that she is holding in her left. It is Hercules club. Her smirk, directed towards Hercules, implies that she has slyly stolen it from our hero.
At the 1896 Salon of the National society of Beaux-Arts, Louis Carrier-Belleuse presented two vases, titled Hercules and Omphale and Save Yourself! At the 1898 Salon these two vases reappeared, but this time they were made out of sandstone, and were featured alongside two other vases: Children and butterflies and Music.
