Style Napoleon III / Ref.16214

Important oak panelling carved with scenes from La Fontaine's Fables, 19th century

Dimensions
Width 96'' ½  245cm
Height 114'' ⅛  290cm

Origin:
France, 19th century

Status:
One panel damaged. One panel previously restored. The fireplace surround is incomplete (sides and shelf missing).

A remarkable ensemble of carved oak panelling whose decorative programme is entirely devoted to the Fables of Jean de La Fontaine. This exceptional set comprises two double-door cupboards, a fireplace surround, sixteen panels of varying dimensions, several cornice elements and a pair of return panels.

Each panel constitutes an autonomous illustration of a fable: The Frog who Wished to be as Big as the Ox, The Grasshopper and the Ant, The Crow and the Fox, The Fox and the Stork, The Frogs who Asked for a King, as well as scenes featuring cats, mice, monkeys, pigs and rural figures drawn from the same corpus. The quality of execution of the reliefs, the fineness of the animal details and the iconographic coherence of the ensemble bear witness to a joinery and carving workshop of the highest order.

This type of panelling with a literary narrative programme, particularly prized under the Third Republic, adorned the great bourgeois residences, libraries and formal dining rooms of the period. The work of La Fontaine, at the crossroads of morality, nature and the French spirit, was the subject of choice for this decorative genre.
