This remarkable stone fireplace, dating from between 1840 and 1850, is fully in keeping with the Neo-Gothic style, echoing the aesthetics and restoration principles championed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. The lintel is richly carved and adorned with an abundant decoration of interlacing foliage, characteristic of flamboyant Gothic ornamentation. The main frieze features angels in high relief, symmetrically arranged, appearing to support the structure in a dynamic and expressive movement. These winged figures adopt reclining postures, reminiscent of sculpted motifs found on Gothic cathedral portals. The jambs are finely crafted with an intricate pattern of intertwined foliage, creating a lace-like stonework effect characteristic of late Gothic art. Their base is solid and massive, contrasting with the delicate upper decoration and ensuring the overall stability of the piece. This fireplace exemplifies the 19th-century fascination with the Middle Ages through a scholarly and refined interpretation of its decorative vocabulary. Its execution showcases exceptional sculptural craftsmanship, inspired by the historicist restoration principles aimed at reinterpreting and glorifying medieval art.
