This beautiful and original fireplace was made in the second half of the 19th century in Carrara marble. Originally set in an apartment in Tarare, near Lyon in France, it is very likely that the person who ordered it, was an industrialist who became rich in the textile industry, as the city was recognized for its muslin and velvet from the second half of the 18th century. It could be Hippolyte Champier, founder in 1884 of the Champier Establishments, fabrics factory in Tarare. The fireplace's entablature is typical of the Louis XV style with its serpentine shape underlined by an oblong moulding. It is adorned on its center with a medallion in which was sculpted a man's profile with a mustache, likely to be the orderer of this impressive fireplace. This medallion is framed with bouquets finely sculpted, composed of acanthus leaves and flowers. The foot, flanking the entablature takes the shape ofnaked caryatids with very masculine faces and arms raised in a gracious way above their heads. They rest on a pedestal adorned with roses and support a basket full of grapes and vine leaves.

This fireplace is sold with a modern cast iron insert adapted to this fireplace
